Look for us at the Reynolds Ranch House! The Western Museum of Mining and Industry (WMMI) is hosting a history-themed family day on the museum grounds. Food, activities, and presentations will be provided throughout the day. The Palmer Lake Historical Society will be in the Reynolds Ranch House with artifacts and historical information about the house (the white farm house just off the North Gate Blvd freeway exit). Just over 200 years ago, Major Stephen Long’s U.S. expedition came through the Palmer Divide area. Long and nineteen other men traveled by boat, horseback, and foot from 1819-1820 to explore the Platte River and its sources. The team included soldiers, artists, and botanists and they were among the first Europeans in the area. They named Castle Rock and "discovered" the columbine flower. Presented John Stansfield.
During World War II, a group of skiers and mountaineers trained to fight the Germans in Italy. Colorado's 10th Mountain Division was established in 1943 at Camp Hale in central Colorado near Leadville. They trained to fight in harsh terrain and the the 10th was sent to Italy at the end of 1944 to fight on some of the roughest terrain of the war. The Colorado Springs area had a streetcar system that was one of the best to be found anywhere. This presentation will cover this history of streetcar service, how it affected the lives of residents, and what became of it. The presenter, John Haney, is a Colorado Springs native whose family has been in the Pikes Peak area since the 1890s. Join us for a walking tour with Bill Normile of the Friends of the Monument Preserve as we explore the Monument preserve and learn its fascinating history. Begun unsuccessfully on Pikes Peak, the Monument Tree Nursery (located just west of the town of Monument) ended up successfully producing over 72 million tree seedlings between 1906 and 1964.
