DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 17\, 2026\n\n\n\n7 – 9 pm \n\n\nPalmer Lake Town Hall\n\nThe 1779 Comanche Campaign tells the story of two fearless men\, Spanish Governor Juan Bautista de Anza and the Comanche Warchief Cuerno Verde (Green Horn)\, both determined to protect their people and preserve their cultural way of life. While the legacy of Juan Bautista de Anza is well established in much of the American Southwest\, his influence during the 18th century remains relatively unknown across today’s Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. To punish the Comanche\, Governor Anza left Santa\nFe with a combined force of 600 mounted soldiers\, who were joined en route by 200 Ute and Jicarilla Apache. They traveled north around Sierra del Almagre (Pikes Peak)\, down the Ute Pass\, and attacked the Comanche base camp on August 31\, 1779\, near present-day Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \nJohn Wesley Anderson\, MBA\, is a published author\, storyteller\, and TEDx speaker. John has published eight books and was awarded the PPLD Golden Quill Award in 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, December 9\, 2026\n6 pm – 9 pm \n\n\n\nPalmer Lake Town Hall \n\n\nThe Annual Potluck is held on the Wednesday prior to the hunt at the Palmer Lake Town Hall. Volunteers bring a dish to share\, and then make souvenir lapel pins for the hunters. They notch the small willow branches\, stamp the year on the bottom\, and tie on pine branches with red ribbon.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, December 13\, 2026\n1 pm – 4 pm \n\n\n\nPalmer Lake Town Hall \n\n\n\nWith red and green capes flying\, hundreds of children and adults dash into the snowy woods near Palmer Lake\, Colo.\, scrambling up and down slippery slopes and laughing as they search beneath evergreen boughs and bushes for the town’s hidden Yule log. \nWithin 15 minutes\, whoops and shouts of “over here” rise from a ravine where three boys stand victoriously over the treasure-an 8-foot-long pine log that has been notched and tied with a red ribbon. \nAmid cheers and high-fives\, the winner and friends straddle the Yule log for their victory ride into town. Other members of the hunting party attach two long ropes to the log and drag it a quarter mile back to Town Hall\, stopping frequently so other riders can hop aboard. \nPalmer Lake cherishes the December tradition\, where the same two-man saw that cut the town’s first Yule log in 1933 is used today. Hunters saw the log in two and save half to start the following year’s ceremonial fire. The other half is carried into Town Hall and set ablaze in the stone fireplace built by Palmer Lake’s volunteer firemen in 1936 strictly for the annual celebration. \nAn old English custom\, the Yule Log Celebration was brought to Palmer Lake by Lucretia Vaile and Miss Evalena Macy in 1934. They sent for a splinter of the Lake Placid\, NY\, yule log\, and held the first event in a local home. Fifty people went hunting for the hidden log\, resplendent in red or green capes. C. R. Hays discovered the first Yule log. He was rewarded with a ride astride the log\, pulled by the other searchers. They were greeted by 200 cheering residents and visitors. They burned half the log\, saving the other half for the next year. People drank spicy cider called Wassail in great quantities while watching the ceremonies by candlelight. Hundreds of Yule log splinters have been sent all over the world to those wishing to start their own holiday tradition.
